Inside Kano's Quiet Push to Reopen Rural Classrooms

In a ward on the outskirts of Kano, a primary school that closed its doors four years ago is preparing to reopen this term. It is one of eleven such buildings on a list quietly circulated among local education officials this year — a list that residents say has changed little in public visibility but a great deal in practical progress.

The closures dated back to a mix of security concerns and structural damage that made several buildings unsafe for use. Since then, children in the affected wards have either walked considerably farther to attend school elsewhere or, in some cases, stopped attending altogether.

A ward-by-ward approach

Officials at the local education authority describe the reopening plan as intentionally unhurried. Rather than announcing a single large initiative, they are working through renovations ward by ward, prioritising buildings that need the least structural work first.

Teachers assigned to the reopening schools say staffing has been the easier half of the equation; getting reliable water and sanitation facilities installed before the new term has proven harder than expected in at least two locations.
